Aluminum Stage II 4.1 block

Is that where the oil squirters used to go?

Nope, but close. These blocks had no pre machined lifter lube capabilities, so..... Had to drill a hole in the main gallery down into the lifter bores, you'll notice each screw points to a lifter bore, then the holes facing into the valley had to be plugged, with the screws.
I don't remember exactly how big I made those holes to the lifters. Had to buy a scpecial long bit. Something between 1/16 to 1/8.

Just curious. He had said there was a pretty knowledgable Stage II guy in Tennessee that had been helping them with their builds, thought I'd ask.

Very cool but I have to agree with Dave here. Machining costs would be in the neighborhood of a small 3 beedroom house. Very cool piece of history there.

Some time back, I had a guy call me, asking about stage 2 engines. AIRC, his email addy was something about "stainless man"...I sent him a couple of Dave Emanuels books. Haven't heard more from him.
I think he had purchased a liner w/ a stage engine in it....he sent some pics that I no longer have.

Beautiful Motivational Inspirations here! I'm impressed! Dave-when are you going to machine yours and run it? I don't think I could own one of them without selling everything I could to get it machined!

I got to the point where I had two blocks, the sleeved 3.8, and the all aluminum 4.1.
I then acquired a nice set of heads(semi-bare), I did have the special rocker assy they required. Some of the SII vets might recognize them.

I then was able to find a NOS set of valve covers and a unmodified intake.

Here's everything mocked up:

But, alas, reality started setting in, and realizing what it would cost to acquire the remaining internals, crank, rods, pistons, cam, lifters, pushrods, etc. etc.
My budget just could not ever handle that kind of a load.

I have hundreds of pictures of these two historic blocks, but finally had to sell everything off. :frown: :frown:

I then realized the the most cost effective manner to oil the beast would be a stock front cover and Dutt oil system.

Here's that mocked up.

alum, indy blocks

I had 3 of them all new, i took one to bowling green back in 98 tried to sell it for 1500.00 no sale, last one i shipped to california sold for 1500.00 plus shipping, kent rubeck still has one still new. well its 15 years old now,
good luck, oc,

Did you get them from Brayton Engineering? Back in '92-'93 I was buying stage parts from Brayton. Jim had offered me three aluminum indy blocks @ $500.00 ea. I think they had a short deck so I passed. Should have bought them anyway. M&A did cast a few aluminum blocks. I remember Ted had whole motor, block, heads & that intake with the interchangeable runners. I had the heads and intake but never used them.

yes. they come from mr,wright braytons crew chief. back in 97 he said he got 6 of them from buick. and they dropped the engine program same year
also said he never built one for indy racing, we got 3 alum, and 3 iron blocks and serval sets of heads that day. later i called him and bought another block and mis, parts, i still have two of the offcenter blocks, i also have a manard indy, oncenter block. the alum, blocks were oncenter deck hight was 9.535
of all the stage blocks i have bought and sold i have never bought a short deck block,i have saw a few, all the used indy 500 and the indy lights
engines had half of the starter pad cut off, i stopped at braytons when i went to the indian casino in michigan. and they didnt have any buick parts at all, i here there are a few indy light engines around for 12000 each,
too steep for me, good luck oc,

Yes, Jim Wright is the guy we would get them from. And they did have the starter boss cut off. I would cut off the part I needed from other 231's we had laying around. Then fit and weld it to the stage 2's. We had quite a few 231's back then they were the worst motor in the eighties. The N/A 231 that is. Between Buick pulling out and Scott dying that was the end of that.

Angryouth.......Is the block that failed on the dyno the one you bought from me? Machined at DG? I would have really liked to be there. Get back in touch with me and we can talk about what/where to get the right parts for your project. I'd really like to see you and your dad set a new record. (assuming you are the same guy) If you've lost my number, PM me for it.
Ken.

Yes Ken that is me...... I have misplaced your number, so I will send you a PM to get that from you. Here is a photo of the engine in the car a few days before we blew the block. We were making incredible power before she let go though!

Are the rockers on my engine the same as these? I believe the ones on my engine are T&D rockers. They sure look identical to the ones in your picture.

While the rocker arms themselves appear to be the same, the mounting systems are different.
