corvair powered by 3.8 and 4T60

Bought a cheap paint gun and some primer. Got most of it primered, looks less ugly. Plan to put the other transaxle in it this weekend. Maybe put oil drain hole in block for turbo. Turbo will happen later. Hmmm - maybe ought to look at a rod insert to check condition of this 190,000 mile motor...

corvair powered by 3.8 and 4T60

updates Replaced donor rack&pinion (on rear) with fixed bracket and tie rods. That took care of whatever wiggle or slop present in the old r&p. Got another transaxle for it, not installed yet. (Used th440T4, hopefully good) Got power buckets from 92 Mercedes for install soon. Doing...

    March schedule of events

maybe next year? It's a long haul from SoCal to NC, and the Toy isn't up to it yet. Next year, the car should be healthy enough. Even then, I'll have to be feeling tough, or maybe I'll get the car more enclosed. 1961 Corvair with '87 fwd 3.8 midships. Turbocharger still in its future. have fun!

progress report Got brakes installed in front with pressure regulator. Front brakes at minimum pressure. Works ok. Rear wheel alignment isn't so good, but driveable. Oh- trans is TH440T4, the predecessor to the 4T60. Later! Jay

    upgrading trans '87 fwd

FWD trans interchange Thanks- that helps. Since the car is really light, and I won't be making big power anytime soon, I'll probably just throw a junkyard unit in for now. So the years I'm looking for is "through 91"? cheers Jay

    Eliminating in radiator trans cooler

trans cooler - both or only external? I'd think the trans is happier at a constant temperature. I think the fluid should go through the external cooler, then the radiator heat exchanger. That way, you dump the highest temp to the outside, then if it is still hotter than the water supply temp...

corvair powered by 3.8 and 4T60

when turbo time comes First I have to get a bunch of chassis and other stuff squared away. Today I worked on lights (turn signal switch and brake light switch toast) rear view mirrors, seat belts, etc. I did test drive it again, still really crappy 1-2 shift. I'll pull the modulator and...

    upgrading trans '87 fwd

I'm building a hybrid (Corvair), using 3.8 and trans from an 87 Delta 88. (Rear/Midships, Fiero style.) I always assumed that that engine and trans were placeholders while I do all the rest of the conversion. The motor is decent, and will get a turbo. The trans has really bad upshifts, and I...

corvair powered by 3.8 and 4T60

Well, the Toy is insured and licensed. Need to get VIN verified to get license tags. Is '61 'vair with 1987 3.8 fwd package mounted midships, Fiero style. I have turbo from '84 T-type, not installed yet. Still finishing lots of stuff, like front brakes (have rear only for test purposes at the...
