After some digging I swapped my car to Type II ignition the other week. To make it easier for those thinking about this here is the part numbers for the module and the coil packs.
Module GP sorensen CBE 103Z.
Coils BWD series E51Z.
Got mine from advance, works great and easy to get . Daniel

Coil Swap

I'm about to do the swap. I picked up a set of coils and module from a 99GTP. The main plug alignment tabs are different. Did you file those down or swap the plug out? Thanks man

If the plug alignment is off then you have the wrong module. I keep an old wireing end in my tool box to cjeck when in doubt

type II ignition

I just picked up the adapter plate from the dealer. It was $30 after tax here in Murfreesboro. I also found that the module (Oreilly's part # CBE104) I had for the type II ignition had different alignment tabs in the electrical plug. After looking through the picture guide and book, I believe I found that the module (CBE103) from an 89 Buick Skylark with a 3.3 has the same plug in and alignment tabs. I'm not sure it's going to work so don't go by a CBE103 just yet. I plan on testing it this afternoon to see. I ordered it and should be here around 5. I'll post whether its the one or not in a little while.
Here are some pictures so far.

Wrong module bub, [ the first one ] I didn't buy an adapter plate, I just drilled new holes in mine. I did have to put a washer under one leg I think. I also had to replace my plug wires as they would not reach then so I got a set of MSD street wires so I could cut them to be routed perfect and look good and neat. Daniel Ray
ps working GREAT , no regrets at all
cbe103z is the module at advance, cbe103 at orileys may be the same thing just different maker

it's cool that GM has that adapter plate, but why did they bother to engineer it in the first place?
was it used in some oem application that might be found in the junkyard?

sweet.. i went to the acdelco website, plugged in the part number, and got a complete list of every vehicle that used that adapter plate:

http://parts-catalog.acdelco.com/ca...uest=1&part=10469468&catalog=11&parttype=2823

looks like any 3.8 made from 90-07 has that adapter plate. should be easy to get for cheap/free from any junkyard.

theres also the 1985+ 3.8 FWD and 3.3 equipped cars that have the similar coils, some look like the tower type, other later ones looks like that one....im not sure whats the deal with the adapters?

Do you have an aftermarket tach?

what is the upside of this swap?

Is it just parts availability vs the stock old stuff? or price ? OR is there a performance upgrade to this? thanks.

A bit of caution

I have had these on my car since 1994. The engineer who was on the design team @ Delco Remy ( who designed the Type II system) Told me the only advantage was that they would take the heat (sitting on back of engine) better than the Magnavox (stock). They work great. He also put me on to hotter coils from GM who used them on a California Methonal Malibu in the mid 90's--siad there was a down side to the methonal coils but did not explain. I now know what it is---they go bad quick. When one of these coils go bad the car will have a fluttering sould only @ WOT. I believe the methonal coils are no longer available as I bought some a few years ago and they were hard to find then. Since 2 of the 3 have failed. I will be buying a set of stock (type II) coils or pick up 3 or more @ a bone yard. Also I found that VDO tachs will NOT work with the Type II system. Again if the plug doesn't fit it won't work.

I installed everything last night. Everything worked great.

Oreilly part numbers
CBE103 Borg Warner controle Module
E51 Borg Warner coils
Adapter plate from GM

Everything bolted up and worked perfect. No mods needed and it all bolted right up.

Why the change?

I had ordered 3 modules and they kept coming in to the store where someone had tried them and returned them , got tired of it and swapped over. Plus you can replace the coils one at a time if one go's out instead of the whole coil pack. Works great here Daniel

Just bringing this back to the top for those interested in doing the swap, been a while and still no problems at all here

the type II system will work just fine for a "driver car"--------i have them in several of my street cars due to easy availability and low cost---------but you will find if you start to build the engine up and run at high RPM's and high power you will have missing problems--------i have never seen anyone able to use them effectively on a high performance built engine under racing conditions------or at very high power on the dyno.........good luck RC

I used this set-up for quite a while. The biggest drawback of this system is it simply don't have enough fire power to turn alot of rpms. My stroker motor wouldn't turn over 55-5600 at all. I swapped in a stock magnavox from my t-type and all was well 6200 with no issues.

So for a stock engine shifting @ 5200-5300 this is a great system.
