Need your opinions please...Thinking about buying a Chevelle SS 454...

Guys, I need your opinions here...Ok, here it goes: I've owned my 2002 Ford Thunderbird (see my signature) for 9 years now and although I'm very pleased with it, I have a strong feeling that it's time for me to move on to something else. For a long time, I've been wanting a big block Chevelle, preferrably a '71 or '72. I know, I know...I can already hear the purists saying that the '70 is the one to get, but personnally, I prefer the single headlamps and round taillights of the '71-'72's.
Do you think I should go ahead and sell my 9 years old 'Bird to buy a Chevelle (even if they're almost 40 years old)?
Also, I'd prefer a clone. I'm not interested in a numbers-matching car as I'd like to do a few upgrades on it (underhood chrome, custom wheels, custom dash panel with aftermarket gauges, etc...) so in my case, it's no use paying more for that...As long as it has a straight, rust free body and frame, big block, either a manual (4 speed) or automatic (TH400) is ok with me, 12 bolt differential, a/c preferred...

What do you guys think? go or no-go?

thanks for your comments!

Claude.

P.S: Both the black and red ones are '71's. The silver one is a '72. (The only difference is the grille and turn signal/marker lamps...)

Do it. Chevelles are still pretty easy to get parts for. I miss my 70 Malibu. I also had an 02 T-Bird with the removable hardtop and they are fun cars, but nothing beats the classics.

Ilove them cars i had a 71 454 ls6 4sd 411 rear ran strong just like the red one and a 71 elcomino green with white strips 454 auto if i had the money i would get one without blinking an eye... good luck.

The '71-'72 Chevelle has always been one of my favorites as well... go for it!!

I have owned 5 Chevelles...I say Go for it!! Nothing like the sound of a healthy big block. Good luck, keep us posted.

I sold my 70 ls6 for 18,000 in 95 because I needed money for a house. Im biased towards the 70 because I had one. I would buy a malibu and make a clone. I would never want a numbers matching car again. The 71 and 72 models are cool also. I would go ls drivetrain for reliability and price.good luck

Having had 69-70-71-72

in chevelle or el camino form,
I say go for it.
I prefer the 71, as I like the grille and turn signals.
with gas like it is, think about the BBC, it will limit your driving,
I'm in the process of a 71 el camino right now, did the frame off , powder coat, and all new susp, 4 wheel disc, dropped spindle, and...........
96 corvette LT1 w/ 4L60E, SS hood. wanted a driver and fun car too.
still drive the Buicks, but wanted something besides the 57 chevy to drive around in.
the ones you show are sweet, follow your desire, choose wich ever one makes you feel good!

I will take the Red one please.

Those also look great in convertibles.

I think that red is the most popular color for SS Chevelles...As for convertibles, they look good too and must be very pleasant to drive on a nice day, but I still prefer hardtops.
Here's a nice '72 convertible clone (was originally an SS 350) WITHOUT bucket seats for sale in NY state...for the ridiculous price of $44,900

I had a 68 Chevelle. I loved the look of that year. I like the dual headlights. The good part about them is there are tons of parts availabie. I think one could almost be built from a firewall and vin tag.

Id buy a buick GS I just think they look better than the Chevelles. and everyone knows a BBB will run circles around a BBC.

I actually like the 71's better than the 70's. I like the round taillights and the marker lights better. The Chevelle is one of the premier musclecars. I would not hesitate for a second.
Since you asked for opinions I actually thought you were kidding when you were contemplating keeping a 2002 Thunderbird over getting one. Sorry.

My cousin has a Black with Gray strips 68 454 4 speed and its awesome
the sound the look under the hood its unbeatable.

I have to agree with everybody else.........Ummm YEA!!:D:D I love older muscle cars. I say you can not go wrong. And as far as the year of the Chevelle I think its all personal preference. GO For IT
