Buick Trivia

Hi Dennis and all,

As an owner of both an 1986 GN and a 1971 GS-455, I may have an advantage in answering your latest Buick Trivia question. Could it be, Buick was trying to duplicate history, as the division had done with the success of the GSX, introduced in 1970? Buick wanted to build a no-holds-barred performance car for 1987, the last year of the rear wheel drive Regal.

Take care,

Nando.

i think they just wanted to sneak in a car that could demolish a Vette at the drag strip.

None of the above is the answer I am seeking on the Buick/GNX question. While both of the above answers are good and technically correct they did one to achieve one goal in a certian area....Name that area that they had a goal to achieve.

I am going by papers dated October 1986 M E Doble I also have a print out of the preliminary content in other words areas they were going to address/change/modify. This is dated August 1986..... It involved 12 areas unfortunately, not all these 12 areas of concern made it into GNX production.

(I see a new trivia contest coming soon)...like I said I have a wealth of original info just not organized nor in one place.

My buddy 54Rich if you get a chance any what you could update and give us a total of trivia contests I have conducted to this point? No need to seperate them just curious. I think it must be near 2 dozen by now...

On the non Buick question Mr AMC is half correct still....no one has hit both parts of that answer.

Interesting I just returned from a small car event that was rained out....at this event was a 1956 Desoto 2 owner car. Neatly displayed in the trunk was a layout of orignal literature parts book and brochure on the optional record player and he even had a original Mopar record player in the trunk on display.

The real rare car was a Mustang Cobra Jet convertible 4-speed with factory air that belonged to Buster Crabbe originally. (I may have spelled his name wrong).

Buick trivia possible answer:

Would a main objective of the GNX project be to increase engine horsepower and straight line traction, so the GNX could rattle off a 0-60 m.p.h., which was 1 second quicker than the factory GN?

BINGO

A winner:

GNX PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE WAS 0-60 MPH A 1 SECOND REDUCTION OVER A GRAND NATIONAL.

That was their performance objective

Their main objective was and I quote"

Create a limited production Grand National that achieves a memorable place in the History of High-Performance automobiles, on that car collectors will want to own and that automotive writers will never forget.

My papers do not show who made that statement but it is part of the papers dated October 1986.

Send me a pm with your full address to send you your prize.

Congrads

Believe you are the first Canadian winner we have had to date.

still one contest running the non Buick one.....weird option first appeared in the 1970s one year only and later appeared in another model later on in the SAME CAR LINE. Not the same car model. Weird may not be the rite term also could be called unusual.

Next Buick trivia....

Not eligible would be the most recent winner - Canadian and any Buick turbo employees.

Concerning the GNX project.

Your answer has to match my notes I have

In the preliminary content (meaning before production of the GNX) they looked at 12 areas where they were considering making changes/modifications. Most of which did make it into production. The turbo - gauges - suspension - tires/wheels being 4 that quickly come to everyones mind.

My papers show 2 other areas they were considering. You do not have to be specific as to what they were but give me the 2 areas that never did make it into production. Their is actually more than 2. You just have to name two in the SAME POST.

Prize value remains $25

Hi Dennis and all,

Hey, you've made my day! I've sent you a PM with the info you requested. Got a lottery ticket today, too.

Nando.

GNX:
disc brakes on the rear
bigger front brakes
it wouldn't have been that hard to graft on some Corvette brakes, and might explain the use of bigger 16" wheels that aren't needed to clear the puny stock G body brakes.

You're right about the 1974 GTO, you see very few of them. They were not very popular. A GTO with a camper tent. I am glad that is one option they did not bring back when they redid the car a few years ago.

Buick trivia
---roof options--AC delete
Wasn't there one astro roof car made though?

kirban 2 cents worth

Your answers are referring to the Buick trivia - GNX...

Both are wrong....on the astroroof question they actually did do a few of them. The owner of ASC had a astroroof which makes perfect sense as that was part of their business (ASC)....The owner of Marriott Hotels had one, and from what I understand perhaps 2-3 others may exist if owners have documents proving such.

However the ones I mention here are the ones that are best known. I am sure under the GNX registry they could fill in the blanks as I am not an expert in knowing abut others. I did own a few years ago Bill Marriotts GN came from the owner after him.

On a side note I have bought and sold 8 real GNXs over the years....believe it or not I know this little old lady (probably in her late 60s) that has a real GNX and drives it as her regular car. Car is in very good condition and every once in awhile I check on it and if it needs a part I get it for her etc.....she has had the car probably since the early 1990s.

Interesting about this lady and her husband you can tell just pulling up her driveway every bush is neatly trimmed, the garden has not one single weed in it and everything is picture perfect. I have been in their house everything is neat and
its like stepping back about 30-40 years.

New non Buick trivia contest coming later tonite.....Keeps me on my toes to read and develop new contests. I have posted another thread in an effort to attract more readers to this thread since the heading may throw people off. A few of you have suggested I do this.....means more competition for the prizes.
