AC Delco Oil Filter Shedding?

This is what made me get away from AC filters.

I had a fram filter take out a motor when it came apart and go thought the engine and then pluged up the pick up. Now I run Wix filters. Have had no issues so far. But that canister filter looks like it maybe the one to have.

+1 on the WIX
I tell you ........
Before the WIX, the car would sit for a couple of weeks and oil pressure (priming it) would not move for about 3-5 seconds (AC-PF52).
Without any changes and the car sitting for 4 months, it took about 1-2 seconds and the oil pressure needle moved up FAST!
To be honest, I was very worried it would take much longer.

I won't look back for now and probably need to buy 30 filters before they start counterfeiting them. BASTARDS!

Edit;
OOOPS, an old post ............
Still valid info though ...... ;)

I bought a case of 12 from my local chevy dealership. I told them what I was seeing at the local parts stores and they had no idea there was a 'different' AC PF52 on the market. They asked me to bring it in.

I did and I kid you not a dozen people from various departments gathered around and said 'what the frack is that thing?"

I paid 50 bucks for 12 'real' filters and that will last me a while.

Wow, this is the first I have heard of AC delco oil filters being cheap junk, as that is what I typically run. Even gnttype.org recommended this filter, guess they need to change their info?

Read the entire thread. Not all AC filters are junk! The odds are more likely you have bought a junk filter if you bought one through the big chain stores. Your best bet is to buy from a dealer or somebody who sells the fleet packs.

I did the same thing. My friend the parts guy was like wtf? Anyway, a little info... The fleet pack filters I bought are identical to the ones Eric sells. (see pic in this thread) I was at the local Wmart recently and got a couple 52's and a 47. Sure enough, the 52's were the same as the cheapo that Eric shows in the pics. But, the 47 from Wmart looked the same as a fleet pack filter. (needless to say, the 52's went back for a refund) I went across the street on the way home and checked a 52 & 47 at Autozone. They both appeared to be like the fleet pack filters from the dealer. So, who knows wtf is going on... :p

I also went to the local Auto Zone and check out the 52's and found that they had both. I went ahead and got what is suppose to be the real one's and put it on my car but didnt like the way it ticked when i first started it up so switched it out for a pure one and the ticking at start up went away.

Never again will I buy a filter from Wal-Mart, even for a beater. Get them from a dealer or reputable distributor.

Funny you say that. I was at Wally world and the PF 52 filters they had all had the black valve in them, and not the pink one. Hhhmm...

I only switched to Mobil One because Ty stopped getting me K&N's for free!

Just look how sexy Mobil One looks too! It's even black and not ugly GM blue! :D

You have a 302 and a 203 pictured, what do they cross to?/fit?

Those A/C filters are made by Champion Labs and are the new E-core design, that is the flat looking top that you see, Champion Labs could possibly even
make your Mobil 1 filter also, as they make a lot of after market filters, but not Fram or Pennzoil, but I looked at a Pennzoil that came into my shop the other day and looked to be made by Purolator, another good Quality filter as is Champion Labs IMHO.

wow Pauly! Awesome post! Now I know I'll NEVER use an AC Delco filter on any of my GM cars again!!

Oil Filters
Broken open, you can see how a counterfeit oil filter (shown on the right) will not protect your vehicle’s engine. This can cause you to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on repairs that were not needed.

Of all the oil filters in the world they picked AC Delco go figure! :) Forget getting paper in your oil this alone should keep anyone away from AC Delco oil filters! Sorry Eric can't help with your 401K plan.

Seems like it would be simple enough to look down the filter and double check for a difference it the open air area as well as the amount of holes in the mesh when buying, just to be safe. Frams going to hell were bad enough, now AC knockoffs ? Soon well all be buying these $140 reuseables

I also agree with the "Don't Block The Bypass". I ran it stock, stock gears, wear plate, ported cover and block passages, screw in oil galley plugs, (modified to not block the block passages). Results: 20 to 30#'s hot idle with 10W30 Kendal Dino Oil, 60# WOT. Perfect for a built 109 block. I ran the big filter, "Purelator" PUR 1 filter. (Worth 2 to 3 # OP across the board) OP bypass removing isn't needed. Clean oil is all that is needed. MHE Gene PS. TA Perf. did my front cover and oil pump mods.

Autozone sells real and counterfit filters.

Look at the STP ones they sell.. like on the PF1218.. then look at the AC Delco.. they look identical. You can tell the garbage from the real when looking at the threads.

I use the Fram HP racing filters. Those are the best. They have the thick rubber gaskets, metal debris screens, etc etc etc. Not cheap tho. Guess nothing ever is when quality is a concern.

TTA uses the HP8 so it doesnt bang on the Idler arm.

JUst use WIX they the best out there IMO..at least the quality seems more consistent over the years

Fram HP Oil filters

What Fram HP filter crosses the AC-52 ?

who sells Fram Racing filters in Chicagoland area?

JM

A long time ago (~15 years) an AC PF-52 cross referenced to a Fram PH 3535 (back when they were all orange, no sure-grip).

More recently I believe the Fram PH 3980 is cross referenced to the AC PF-52

I purchased 10 pf52 filters from SUMMIT recently and they turned out to be the aftermarket pf52 filters as described in turbofish38's post. I am switching to a real filter tomorrow, I cant take any chances!

i think i have a modern day explanation-------since i am in both the manufacturing and import business i am going to offer a little oversight on this issue after following it for a while--------i seriously doubt that these "counterfeit" filters are really counterfeit at all-------MANY companies outsource a percentage of their manufacturing off shore-------usually it starts a little at a time to lower thier average cost-------evenutally it can lead to all or most of a particular product-------sometimes the specs are relaxed and sometimes they are not--------i'll bet long money that these filters have more than one source (domestic or otherwise) and that they are all "officially" AC Delco product................RC

I just pulled out the 2 AC 52s I got from Walmart last month to check them out. They both are stamped product of USA and that is on the cardboard boxes as well. The cases are strong and the top has the bump in it as well as the TT stamped into it like the fleet one turbofish38 pictured. Looking into it, the metal perforated cylinder is smaller diameter and has smaller number of holes like the real filter in the comparision pics to the counterfit. I'm confident I got 2 real ones.
