[x-post] turbo play in 85?

Hey guys, doing a crosspost from the hotair section because I haven't got any answers.. cut, paste:

I'm getting all the parts together for my 85 wh1 rebuild, and I keep coming back to the turbo. It's not stock, and was replaced two owners ago. (Not positive, from the previous owners say, but he wasn't really bright) It's a Garrett turbo, I'm not sure about the make, but it M10 is stamped right before Garrett. The car has never been together with me as an owner.

Now the fun stuff:

There is a bit of play in the turbo, it can move maybe a mm or 2 in any direction around, and it looks and sounds like it can nick the edge of the turbo. Does it need rebuilding?

From what i understand.in and out play means bad bearings and up and down play is ok unless it hits the housing.

Sounds like time for a rebuild or new turbo.
