Wheel backspacing

I know this has been beaten to death ad naseum. Before you flame me, I have used the search function. But, the information is sort of spotty.

I currently have 15x7.5 up front and 15x8.5 out back.

I'd like to move to a 15x9.5 or 15x10 out back. The car is stock ride height, and the frame rails are stock.

So, my question is, will the 15x9.5 or 15x10 work with a stock wheel well and stock rail with no modification. So, what is the widest 15" wheel that you can run on the street with no rubbing issues, and what size tire would you run with it?

for average use, I've been told about 255s are about the biggest you can get without rubbing...although I have also heard that you can also run up to 275s, but not much bigger.
