What would cause a battery to spark when you try to connect the cables? I can have one connected but when I try to connect the other it sparks.

Any kind of draw in the car will do that. Interior light, hood light, Stiffening caps for aftermarket stereos are always exciting. A small spark is normal, If it looks like you're trying to arc weld that is a bad thing.

Cross dressing the leads will bring serious fireworks very quickly.

Mine also arcs when connecting the battery. Not a big arc mind you but still...IMO any is not good. Batteries don't like sparks.

And on mine, the under hood lamp was removed, all power accessories were off, I unplugged the ECM wire, not sure what else on the car could be drawing any current except maybe the memory for the clock.

Found the problem. Seems like the little 10 mm eyelet was bent just a little to touch the body of the alternator. I think I fried my alternator though.

At least the car runs after 2 years of sitting.
