Can I use a cheap router as an extender or should I buy a dedicated one? The only spare router i have is a airport extreme. Looks like it cannot be used except with other apple stuff. Noticed the cheap routers are the same price as the dedicated extenders. What would be the best choice?

I think they both will do the same. But what I did last week after my son busting my chops for the past 3 weeks about his F***ing FORTNITE game lagging . I finally broke down and ordered the Powerline adapter. Here is the link to Amazon. It saved me time and not sure about money. But I didn't have to run a cable from one end of the house to the other end upstairs. Crawling through the crawl space and then to the attic. A pain.
All I did was plug this into an outlet near my router downstairs ran a cable to it. Then plugged the other unit in an outlet in his room upstairs and ran a cable to his PS4 from it. It uses the house electrical lines to communicate instead of WIFI. NO MORE LAGGING and kid can leave me alone now.
Now I have to figure out how to get him to learn how to communicate with people and read a book other than being locked up in his room 24/7 playing FORTNITE ( the devil)
Very impressed with the system and I also purchased a third unit to run into my master bedroom so I don't get any lagging when I am watching my porn. :0) JK I am good beer drinking catholic. ;0)

Already have the older version of that powerline adapter. Works great. But there is a dead spot in the kitchen and main headroom. Thought I could buy an add on to the system. But everyone is telling me I have to buy an entire new system for the extra reciever.... now I would have to pay for an extra transmitter/base station I dont need. Thought I could just buy a cheap used router and use it as a wifi extender. Never done it before.

I have a powerline adapter. Tp link. Can't find any extra receivers. Dont see any online. People at the store keep pointing out I have to buy the entire kit to get the extra receiver.
