Are the engines in the TA 89 a 87 GN or an 87 GNX? Slight difference between the two, but what the production engine put on the TA?

They are all 3.8 V6s, the GNX differs from the regular grand national in that it has a better turbo and intercooler and chip.

Turbo TA has the same intercooler as the GNX, The engine block is the same however the TTA has a cross drilled crankshaft, different pistons and the major difference is the cylinder heads are from a FWD 3.8 of the time period. They were used because of clearance issues in the engine bay of the 3rd gen f-body. They also happen to flow better than the regular grand national heads. Stock for stock many magazines of the era dyno the TTA about 20whp higher than any of the grand national/GNXs. Also TTA's came with factory stainless steel headers which flow much better, GNs did not. From what I understand the TTA stock turbo is unique and different from the GN/GNX.

There are disadvantages to the TTA engine though. No availability of Aluminum heads. Stock Iron heads can be ported though finding correct casting numbered heads that work are getting limited. Also for the GN's there an aftermarket aluminum engine block as well as ported aluminum heads available.

Most parts are interchangeable except for when it comes to internals.
