Actually scarfed cut sealing rings is the correct term.

So did this ultimately cause the burnt clutch smell? What did I kill by doing it?

FWIW, I was in an awkward position and and the converter was in but was butting up against the flex plate. I'm a small guy and the "kick" was the equivalent of a couple taps with a dead-blow hammer.

Guts didn't appear to be stacked; the plastic spacer looks the same as when it went in.

The slip-rings in the input shaft look good. the pump did go in nicely with a couple taps from a hammer handle to get the o-ring past the lip and seat it on the case.

There are some chuncky pieces of clutch material in the pan and what seems a lot of metal on the magnet for the run-time it had. I assume the stringy pieces are leftover pieces of babbit from the old pump bushing that hadn't found their way to the pan. I checked and the new pump bushing looks great. Not sure where else it might have come from.

So am I back to concluding the forward clutches were shot when I got it?

That angled place to the left of your magnet
would make a great home for a drain plug.
I used a Chevy small block plug and a 1/2" N.F.
nut which I spot welded inside my pan. No welder?
Maybe your local muffler guy would weld it for a
few dollars.
