Thought I had a knock

Sounded like one of those sounds you don't want to hear. I've heard them before. However, oil pressure was normal, no tell-tale readings on the knock gauge, ran fine. Ok, try the screw driver trick trying to locate the sound which isn't always there. The top end sounded normal, nothing hitting, etc. So, jack it up and drop the pan, check the rod bearings, they looked just fine(almost perfect.) That's good, didn't check the mains but checked lateral movement,, no problem there, damn, WTF, I kinda punched the starter,,IT MOVED. Huh? I shake it back and forth and it sounds like a metal on metal knock. Excellent! Both bolts took a couple turns before they got tight. Wasn't a total loss, as the pan was seeping alittle on the drivers side.

Moral, check the easy stuff first.

FWIW, The motor has 25k miles on it since I put it together, and, the cam (204-214) looked fine(from underneath), as did the bottoms of the lifters, so that is good.
