Steering wheel problem??

My steering wheel has about 1/4 inch play in the entire wheel. The tilt section moves up and down and side to side about 1/4 inch. Is there a way to tighten this up? It just started 3 days ago. No work has been done on the car.

take the columm apart an there's 1/4" or 7mm that you tighten...PITA

Also inspect the two ball bearings in there. They have a plastic cage in them that likes to break. If you need to replace the bearings use GM part number 7844651.

also check the area under the tilt lever. See if the cover is swelled out slightly, if so one of the tilt pins has popped out and it can be hammered back in and staked in place with a punch. This happens more on chevrolets than the bolts coming loose.
