r12 or 134?

I did a r134 retrofit on my 85 and just added pag oil and fittings. I didn't change o rings because I read I didn't need to.
The mineral oil protects them from the r134.
That was many years ago and that system still works fine but I have to top it off now and then.
R12 is not that expensive anymore because as less people are using it, the supply is going up. I bought a large tank of it
off Ebay shipped to my door it was about double per pound of r134. I chose to use it in my 87 GN which I want
to keep as original as possible.
You mention your bearing making noise and your compressor smoking. It sounds like the clutch bearing is bad.
You can replace the clutch without changing the compressor but you'll need special tools which don't cost all that much.
If that clutch bearing causes the clutch to slip, that is why your compressor smoked.
You may be able to get a used clutch from one of the sponsors of this site.
Than just retrofit or get some r12 and top it off.

R12 can be cheap here in the desert, Phoenix CL has a guy selling 4 12 oz and 3 14 oz cans for $100.
