Today is the anniversary of the Boston Massacre. An unruly mob of Bostonians were angry at the quartering of British soldiers. They attacked a contingent of nine with snowballs, and the British returned musket fire, killing five. Established revolutionaries Samuel Adams and Paul Revere siezed the incident to foment continued rebellion. John Adams defended the British soldiers against a charge of murder and won acquittal for seven of the nine, two being convicted of a lesser charge, manslaughter. The funeral procession for the slain Americans was attended by more than half of Boston's population. And the Briish withdrew their troops from Boston.
