new fuel pump, no pressure

just installed new pump, direct plug in and pump is not running. checked fuses (good). hot wired at alternater and pump still not running, but can here relay click (twice). checked fire at relay and after (have fire at both). removed tank and pump. unpluged pump and checked fire at connector (have fire). hooked a positive and ground to pump and pump will run.

Why want it work in car when bypassed at alt. or by switch?

decided to go out and check one more thing. when checking fire at connector where pump pig tail connects, I was doing it by jumping it thru prong at alternator. checked it again by turning ignition on (had fire). connected pump and nothing.

more info: this is a hp walbro, new out of box
just to make sure I'm right about this. pump comes with a pig tail inserted that has a red and black wire. I disconnected that pig tail and inserted my plug (stock) directly into pump. according to directions, i gathered that the pig tail that come with it is for earlier model gn's.
