Like most all aftermarket performance parts, intakes rarely fit proper on any engine build since there are so many variables like type of head, how much the deck is cut, head gasket thickness, size of intake port and gasket and other factors.

We have never installed a Champion race intake on an engine without port matching, as well as machining the intake surfaces for proper fit.

In fact, a stock intake many times will need to be machined to fit proper after an engine rebuild.

I agree but this is a champion head an intake even the fel pro 1200 gasket has such little contact with maybe 1/32 of an inch above the top of the port on the intake. This is GN1R head no problem there but the intake is going to need more gasket contact than that at 25 to 30 psi of boost either way its time to weld up an intake.I have used them on two previous builds with out any problems good stuff just this one is funky.

I am not a head-porting expert, but one thing I have learned from those that are experts, is that the port should be worked to be taller is best.

Welding on the top would then be counter-productive when trying to improve air flow?

On the GN1 heads and max-port TA heads we cannot use a 1200 gasket because of the same situation you have encountered, so we use a tall port gasket to accommodate this situation. These gaskets also come in varying thickness to assure exact intake-to-head port alignment.

From the photos it look's like the problem area you are talking about is what was left after the rough CNC cut. Port matching to the taller gasket that Nick mentioned would correct this and also I think the R heads should have a taller port already that would require raising the intake runners to match the heads. Does the 1200 fit the R head correctly ? If not Weber sells a Cometic gasket that has a larger opening & does not require trimming.

When I purchased my Champion intake my buddy had to get the image straight out of the box milled down. This is on a stock block with Champion Irons and it didn't even fit. Sort of pissed me off when I had to dish out more money when I just got spending a pretty penny on a CNC intake that matched everything else.

Who makes a tall port gasket as I have max-port TA SE heads? Currently I'm using Fel-Pro 1200s.
