lighting rod shifter question about the shifter plate

I have talked to one guy on here that was selling his and posted some pics of them can't find them now but ,I know you have to cut the shifter plate but do you cut a big hole taking out the raised pieces that go around the shifter hole and the indicator hole? To make it flush for a new console overlay. If so how have you done this?

You've got to cut a fairly large hole out of both the console and the overlay to fit the Lrods. When I did mine I cut the metal out of the overlay and then filled it flush with fiberglass to make a blank overlay. I cut out the fiberglass to fit the new shifter pattern and put a new overlay from Mark on top.
