Identifying 3 bar map

Alright, I've beat the search function to death and still can't get a clear answer since you can't search a three letter word. How do I properly identify a 3 bar map sensor? I thought you were to test voltage on the middle terminal with the key on and it would be around 1.6v if it's a 3 bar. Is this right, because I've tried and it seems that my voltmeter bounces around and never really settles. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Dan
