RIP 2012 ZL1 #1635 UPDATE 1/8/2014 The latest in the saga of the totaled ZL1 #1635...

The dealer was supposed to be finding me a 2013 ZL1 new. They agreed (or so I thought) that it would be for the best since buying a used one (yes, ME BUYING from them) could only lead to problems down the road.

I have been patient. I finally got a call on Monday (1/6) to come over to look at the car they "found" for me. They were sure I would be pleased. Imagine my surprise when the car they "found" turned out to be a trade-in on a new Stingray. The car was a 2012 ZL1, black like mine, but with a sunroof (which I do not want), 34% more miles than mine, new tires (why did it need new tires at 13,588 miles?), different wheels than mine, non-Chevrolet emblems front and back, and tinted windows. Also absolutely NO documentation on the car, even though I was told the car had more documentation than mine.

I was not even told the mileage on the car until I went out and sat in it for myself. Amazing that we had to go over all the figures first. And yes, I was to buy this car from them. They did offer $4K "feel good" (their words, not mine) money to buy the correct emblems and rims. However, nothing was mentioned about a lower price for the higher mileage.

My wife and I just were not that happy with the car. We offered a counter-offer and let the dealership for them to discuss our proposal.

When we got home last night, we discovered through this forum (thanks, guys) that the car was a TWO owner car, not a one-owner car like we were told. We also found out that the car was hit 3 days after the original owner purchased the car. WE paid $55 for a CarFax report--the dealer didn't even offer that for us. They did have some other report, but it wasn't a CarFax.

So they were basically trying to SELL us a 2-owner vehicle that had previous body damage, along with tinted windows, incorrect emblems, more mileage, the apparent need for new tires, and heaven only knows what else.

They called today to tell us that their original offer to buy THAT car from them was ALL they were going to (or willing to) offer. Take it or leave it. We really did not want a twice-used car with no documentation and do not feel it was a reasonable replacement for our show-winning, pristine, fully documented car with much less mileage.

So folks, almost a month later, I am still making payments on a car I do not have, and certainly cannot drive. And the dealer is unwilling to step up and "do the right thing."

I have retained an attorney, but really, why should I have to pay attorney fees when I am the innocent party in all of this. I did not ask for my car to be stolen by a dealer's employee.

The dealer is upset about the negative press they have received, yet they seem unwilling to do anything to remedy the situation.

I guess they will get what they deserve, even if I do not get what I fully deserve (my car replaced at no expense to me).

If this hadn't actually happened to me, I don't think I would have believed it.

The story has now been covered in the local newspaper (Cape Gazette), the local news station (WBOC), and a Philadelphia station (NBC10). Simply amazing...

They shut down their facebook page because of all the negative "reviews" that were popping up. I'm tempted to call them up and tell them I was thinking about coming to their dealership, but for some reason I can't access their FB page to see if people like the dealership.

Geeeeez I would burn that dealership to the ground if he don't get at least what he wants. How do you take a call like that, explaining they totaled your baby and not go ape shit. I'm sure he flipped out, I know I would defiantly think about hurting someone, if not act out. I hope this works out for him, better yet I hope he sues and gets more than enough money to buy a new spec'd out 2014 ZL1 from another dealership. Maybe he would like a COPO also. Poor guy

Looks like it's on the front page of Yahoo. Im glad see what the Dealership does now.

Wow...so they offered him a higher mileage 2 owner car with no documentation that had been in an accident, along with 4k so he could get the proper badges and wheels put on the car. Also the car had already gone through a set of tires in 13k miles and of course he turned it down, which I certainly would have too. Their response was "I almost think it's extortion," the general manager told me. "I don't think any sane person would turn down [this deal.]" He later concluded, "I almost think they're as bad as the guy who stole the car." Really? You expect a guy to take a car that's been in an accident and been abused in exchange for his cream puff show car?

Sounds like the car they offered got picked up at an Auction. Probably worth 10K less then his car.

Coming from a small business owner, a reputation can make or break you. It would be in the dealerships best interest to resolve the matter with a new replacement IMO. It's a hard pill to swallow but something like this could have long term effect on the their success.

I think it's to late to save face on this deal for the dealer....in the beginning no one would have heard about it or they would have been the greatest dealer for doing it and received props if they replaced it with new... now seems too little too late.... but with a lawyer involved now along with the press it looks ugly. I also thought I read that the replacement car that was offered to him was a trade in at the dealership for a new corvette, so it isn't like they went out of their way to find it. He ran a carfax that cost him after the forum found out a few things on that car for him. And I think he still had to buy it too....lol

I hope that dealer never sells or services another car. They need to go under for this.

Go to your local college and find the community bulletin board. Put up the dealers phone number and a headline about your car. Then ask the kids to keep calling the dealership and ask stupid questions about it. I guarantee they will have to change their phone number. College kids love this kind of shit.
I gotta say this trend is beginning to piss me off. Reminds me of a similar situtation. Cars left at businesses and destroyed...then the business claims they are not responsible...huh
Must be the new American way.

The dealership has a message on their website now about this 'accident'.
