Ethanol...

Let the knock questions begin.

Since ethanol is alcohol based, it should not cause in knocking/pinging problems. Most of the "octane boost" additives are cheap alcohol based products.

However, the burn is not as hot, and that's where some problems with driveability, starting, and stalling may come into play. I think a big immediate fear is that alcohol will mix with water... so whatever moisture that's been accumulating in the tank (since who knows when) will suddenly mix with the fuel and be sent to the motor. It may get worse before things "stablize" and get better.

Lastly, since the burn is not as hot, guess what, takes more fuel to get the same amount of energy we've been accustomed to. In other words, lower MPG's. Isn't that what we strive for: lousy fuel that costs more and requires us to use more of!

Just what little I know. I thought there were a couple of fella's here that work for a oil company that could have some info.
