Disconnect the wire down at the end of the column, tape another piece of wire to it so when you pull the switch out the side of the column and pull on it's wire, it'll pull the piece you attached to it. Once you have have it up through the column, tape it to the wiring on the new switch, then just pull on that wire at the base of the column to feed the new one down inside the column.
