Collapsing coolant hose

Why would the upper hose from motor to radiator collapse? I then release the pressure by turning the cap and the hose returnes to normal?
The lower hose does not collapse.

The lower hose probably has a spring in it to keep the shape. The radiator cap is not letting fluid return from the overflow reservoir; or the hose is blocked.

Thanks Joe that makes sense as I just noticed the water leaks out of the cap after the car is shut off. The water must not be going into the overflow bottle

Interesting, how much trouble would it be to convert the rad lines to AN lines and fittings, and what size would be best?

Usually it's the lower hose that gets sucked shut when the engine is running; so they put a spring in it about the ID of the hose. When everything cools down; the cap won't let anything return; and the upper hose gets sucked down.
