"Clunk" when tranny warms up...

When the car/tranny is cold, if I put it into R and then D there isn't any driveline lash, it feels smooth. If I go drive around for awhile (20 minutes) and do the same thing, there's a bit of a whirring sound and then a clunk/clang as it switches between the two gears.

I'm trying to nail down if it's a driveline issue or a tranny issue, but I can't think of any reason that the driveline (rear end fluid?) warming up would make this kind of change. The "whir" sure seems like it's coming from the tranny.

Suggestions? It upshifts/downshifts at WOT and everything else just fine.

The clunk/clang is prolly coming from the rear end ring and pinion. there will be too much play in the two.
