Hey all...thinking about taking my dad out to the bonneville salt flats next year. He is big into studebakers, which broke a lot of speed records there, so I think he would really enjoy seeing the flats. So the question is, when is the best time to go out and see and some races? I know Speed Week is popular? any other bits of info I should know? places to stay etc??

thanks
Nate

I was thru SLC in Sept and inquired about the salt flats.
I learned there is nothing there when there isn't any racing, no stands or anything. Its about 2hrs west of SLC so I passed this trip.

Thanks for the replies and the info...It looks like speedweek is the time to go...has anyone ever been out to see it? How many days did you stay out there?

Thanks,
Nate

been there twice

I believe it last 5 day or so. Car broke early first trip so only stayed 2 days. Second trip was just to stop and watch a friend on our way to Ca. Mid to high 90 temp. with low humidity--not bad. Take a straw hat---sun screen--and DARK sun glasses. The sun off the salt is bright. If driving your own car--the salt sticks to it like slushy snow--we rented one. Better book your rooms early--lots of hotels-casinos @ the interstate. Courses are a few miles from town. Not a spectater sport but something any car person should see @ least once. You and your dad will enjoy it. It is amazing what you will see.
Some where in the lounge section is a video of my friends 88 Cutlass going down the Salt---I believe he has since went 224 MPH.

Edit ---Dec. 7 2009-"bonnieville salt flats" Check this post.

I have heard that the rental companies dont want their cars on the salt. If you rent a car be sure to wash the salt off before returning it.

When you book your rooms....look in Wendover Nevada which is just over the border from Wendover Utah which is a hell hole. Wendover is just a few miles from the salt flats. Also the Utah Highway patrol like to hide on the Utah side to catch you speeding so go the speed limit. August is our hottest month here in Utah so be prepared for that. You can check out this site for more info. http://www.nevadaweb.com/cnt/cc/wendover.html
