What advantage would this piece be over a simple aluminum apply ring to just replace the factory apply ring ?

the apply ring works but the piston has more mass and is much more stable reducing distortion on apply.the apply ring can spin when not applied and wear between it and the piston.the piston greatly improves shift quality and clutch life.i just installed our lo reverse piston in a unit and reverse feels like a different unit.new wave plate too.

I dont see how anything suitable could be produced that would be usable with a stock piston. You are stating with a piece of bar stock that is 6 inches in diameter or more and turning it down. You are in the same ballpark for run time while making a ring or a whole piston. Though the piston program would be more in depth. There is no reason why you wouldnt just make a whole piston from a manufacturers point of view.
