If I disconnect the computer without disconnecting the battery could I have ruined it?

The possibility is there but highly unlikely as long as you were grounded before removing it. Unplugging the samll plug I beleive disconnects the ecm from the battery anyway. Hope this helps.

I disconnect my computer quite a bit while checking out other units. I never disconnect the orange wire.
