Another valve spring question

I bought a set of valve spring from Kirban's last summer. The catalog says they're 100 lb springs. When I install them, should I leave the cups off? Any advice on valve seals? Thanks.

82lbs. is the high spec. limit on the stock cam.

You are at 100 plus the spring variation error and then you want to add 9lbs. for the cups.

I wouldn't.

Felpro viton seals worked for me, local store, as did the stock GM ones for the other car from GMParts Direct.

Thanks Salvage

I don't plan on using the cups, but will probably use the springs since I already own them. Thanks for the info on the seals. Has anybody out there had cam problems that they can attribute to the Kirban's springs. I would think they've sold hundred's of sets and I don't recall anybody talking bad about them. My car has had Mobil 1 in it since my first oil change so I would guess the cam should be in good shape. If I were to do it over I would probably get the Comp Cam's springs. I guess I should have done a little more research before I bought. Live and learn.:)

If you want me to test your new ones I can at work easily.

Peace of mind is a good thing.

I'll pay the shipping post office priority box one way. :)

4 or 5 springs should be enough to tell what they all are.

Instron force machine good to .01lb. Non destructive test. :D

I installed a set of Kirbans springs "on car" a couple hundred
miles ago and the top end performance is way better than
before, BUT...
Now I've got a slight tapping sound from the valvetrain at
about 1200 rpm, no performance problems, just noisier.
I asked about this on a recent thread and found out I just
opened a whole new can of worms:mad:
Apparently, it's not a simple "remove and replace" procedure.
You need to check the installed height on the valves, spring
pressures, coil bind, ect...
I didn't see any mention of this stuff in the instructions:rolleyes:
Now I'm risking wiping out the cam and I wish I would have
waited until the heads needed to come off to replace springs.

I think those "cups" are factory spring dampners and according
to the instructions are not to be reused, as the new springs
already have dampners. Valve seals are easy to replace when
doing the springs, so you may as well replace them too.

Instrons are more fun for tensile testing. strech.... STRECH.... POP!. :D We have one over at Rutgers School of engineering that I get to play with.

Squish - Pop it's all good fun. :)

We have a really high speed camera system that we use to watch stuff break. It runs in real slow motion. Cool.
