Does a freshly rebuilt 2004r transmission with the BRF core need a shift kit if it is going to be placed behind a 307 with 3.73 gears? The transmission guy I talked to offered to just rebuild it for now cause once he puts the shift kit in there is no taking it out. Will also be putting in a d5 torque converter.

I dont want something thats going to be snapping my neck at low or half throttle. Wont be seeing the track that much. I do however want it to have a solid shift.

Put a kit in it. There are kits with different levels of firmness. There are vendors on this site that I am sure can help you out.

theSHIFT RECALIBRATION KIT #24RSRK/A $129.00

The main focus of this kit is to reduce clutch and band slippage common with the factory hydraulic calibration. This easy to install kit includes all the necessary parts to recalibrate the hydraulic circuitry of the GM2004R transmission for high performance street and dragstrip usage. This is accomplished in many ways.New .500" TV boost valve, and .296" intermediate boost valves and a heavy duty pressure regulator spring significantly raise transmission mainline pressure to increase clutch and band apply pressures. A new AC/DELCO seperator plate is properly orificed to increase the flow of oil to the friction elements. Re-engineered springs for the accumulator valve, line bias,1/2 accumulator ,and 3/4 accumulator, and an updated 3/4 accumulator piston introduce a throttle sensitive accumulator and pressure rise system that meets the demands of high output engines. This reduces friction element failure and excessive heat build up during and after ratio changes. This kit allows the shifts to get shorter and firmer as the throttle is opened, resulting in clean ,positive gear changes at small throttle angles without the "bangs and clunks",and short firm shifts with larger throttle angles. Most kits do not have this feature engineered into them resulting in brutal part throttle shifts that beat and break internal components as well as generate many new drivability complaints.Hundreds of these kits are in use and this kit is recognized as the best of its kind.includes all the necessary gaskets and instructions. Please note that high performance applications will benefit from the use of a larger intermediate servo to multiply the clamping force applied to the intermediate band.If your transmission is not from an 86 / 87 Buick Grand National or 89 Turbo Trans Am which was factory equipt with a high performance intermediate servo assembly, the use of a high performance servo assembly should be considered. The following 2 kits include intermediate servo assemblies.
