My converter started doing this when it started to go bad. Noise went away when you got above walking speed, and when in neutral. Got louder with time and a bit before it failed it started acting like the lock up was acting up and not releasing properly.

Did mine myself but you have to be really meticulous with the removal of the old stuff on the board. Time consuming, but if you take your time the results are great. Looking back, if someone would have done mine for $50, I would have sat back with a drink and happily let them do it.

I'd say torque converter - had exactly the same thing with mine. Ran it till it developed a problem a bit like the lock up solenoid not releasing at coast down and the car wanted to stall. I thought it was the solenoid. Anyway, swapped the converter (Dusty hooked me up - highly recomended)...
