I have a complete set of factory service manuals. It talks about how to read the codes from a California car with an ECM when the check engine light is on, but mentions nothing that I can find for a 49-state car without an ECM.
I have not been able to locate the connector yet. I found something in the owner's manual (page 2-15) that says:
