Looking to convert to a power seat in my 87 GN. Has anyone used another year GM track that will bolt in place of stock?

Not really 100% on this but I think 87 is different then previous years. Also not sure if any other GM tracks will work, but I know a member with a working 87 setup if your interested.

Now I guess I'm not sure but didn't all grand nationals come with power seats? I thought that since a GN was an option package it automatically came loaded with all the goodies. The previous owner on my car felt the need to convert it to manual (probably due to cost).

Not sure about other years but 1986 and 1987 are the same ( I have both) but the switch is different. Looks the same but one is 7 pin (86 and hard to find ) and one is 8 pin. (87 available ) You will aso need the seat trim part that the switch fits into and the power wiring feed to the seat. As long as the bolt pattern is the same for the floor and the seat, I would thnk any GM seat would fit. I have a 86 and 84 El Camino and they are the same.

Hey Shawn if your looking for a Plug n play set up I have the entire thing. Track, switch, trim pieces, motor and harness. I'll make you a great deal if your interested PM me.

Nope. Power seat was a separate option.

Not even close, the GN package was all black with 2 tone interior and had to have the turbo motor which automatically means ac, 200 trans, 8.5 rear...but the other options could go either way, there are some real stripper gn's out there.

I could never figure out what GM was thinking or if they just had a bunch of extra parts laying around the assembly line. I bought mine off the showroom floor in mid December of '87 and it had an open rear WITH aluminum drums. I've seen them with crank windows and a power seat. Why?

I think only open rears came with aluminum drums in 87, but I think I just heard/read that somewhere.

It's not gm it's who ever was doing the ordering.

My 86 had aluminum drums and the G80 axle, but I guess that could have been changed before me?

It's definitely possible to do a "factory installed appearing" installation as long as you have all the correct parts...Proof is I did it myself. You need to know that the power seat tracks are different from '81-'86 and '87. The earlier tracks ('86 ans older) have one single motor mated to a plastic transmission to move the seat in whichever direction you choose. the later tracks ('87), have three separate motors to do the job. Both models will fit in your GN, but parts aren't interchangeable between the two kinds of tracks.

I was hoping some of the 95+ tracks would work as theyre pretty cheap on Ebay. PM'd you Stefan about the seat track.

You need a track out of a 81-88 gbody. The mounting points where the feet of the tracks bolt to the car are different based on the car's body style The holes to mount the seat to the track will be the same. You can transfer most any seat from one GM vehicle to another but you need to use the seat track from the car you are mounting the seat in.

Thanks David, I figured as much. I had F-body seats on my stock manual tracks at some point years ago, was just hoping other track would bolt up. Thanks for the info, time to track down one from a G-Body.

To my knowledge 86 should have aluminum drums and aluminum bumper support, 87's don't except like I said I think the open rear cars might have received aluminum drums.

I'm gonna check my son's original 45K 87, it has a open rear end.

I took a power seat track out of a mid 90,s camaro or trans am and it bolted right in except i had to weld a tab on the camaro track for the 2 front bolts the plug was the same as the GN

I am actually planning to remove the power seat and install manual.

Weight savings plus simplicity.
Wanna swap?
