Threw the first part of paint down

Brent, hang in there buddy lol, its a lot of work but you can be proud of yourself when you get it done ! Keep them pics coming, I have been watching to see how it's going Daniel Ray

My goal was to get it done yesterday, I didn't succeed. You probably know how it is better than me. I planned on priming and painting the main shell yesterday but as I was cleaning it up I noticed I had some more work to do so I had to push the paint back a day, which mean I will paint it the next really nice day we have. In the meantime I will work on the rework pieces and the sanding and buffing.

Your sanding advice was great, I suck at buffing though, it's taking me forever and a day.

Trust me, slow buffing is still a LOT BETTER than fast buffing and burning the paint lol !!!!!! I speak thur experiance on this. Talk about pissing you off grrrrrrrrrrrrrr What buffing compound are you using and are you getting it really smooth before you start to buff? Feel free to holler at me at the house tonight if you want 229 423 6078 Daniel Ray

Thank you, I will give you a call. I'm taking it up to 3000 grit, looks smooth and then I start buffing and see a few 1500 grit marks and have to rehit that area. But I'm all about not burning this paint off, I seriously do not want to have to rework any other parts, lol. The edges make me nervous as hell. So far though what I have done looks real good, the worse issues are 2 gnats and one small area with solvent pop, which is barely noticable.

I will probably spend this weekend sanding and buffing what I have done already, prepping the rework pieces and then the next day I have good weather is go time.

Well, I officially suck. I painted the shell today, I will have to paint it again because it ran all over the place on me. :(

If I'm lucky I can get by with wetsanding the top coat (didn't clear, it would have been pointless) and then reshooting the top coat.

The worst of it, drivers side fender, right at the GNX louver cut outs. :(

Good, bad or other, there you go. It'll get done, and be right, but my god I could use a break.

I GIVE YOU A LOT OF CREDIT FOR YOUR PROJECT. ANY GOOD PAINTER GETS WHAT WE CALL "FLOW INDICATORS" ALTHOUGH I WON'T ADMIT IT BUT I GOT A SAG THE EXACT SAME PLACE YOU DID AT THE GNX VENT HOLE,THE CLEAR PUDDLED THERE AND FLOWED OVER ONTO THE FENDER. I BLOCKED THE HECK OUT OF IT,AND IT DID COME OUT. YOU HAVE METALIC THOUGH. I WOULD BLOCK THE FLOW INDICATORS OUT WITH 600 GRIT, PISS A LITTLE COLOR OVER THE AREAS YOU WENT THROUGH,AND FOLLOW WITH 4 COATS OF CLEAR............BEST OF LUCK TO YA... ...........................................................................................

X2 Brent dont feel bad, when i painted my first car i had the same problem didnt shoot the clear, sanded it down and repainted next day and came out good. dont get discouraged.

I just did a test sand spot with 600 grit in the worst area, looks like it should sand flat, thankfully.

Remember that when your painter says $4,500+ for a great paint job he means it, this stuff is tedious. :D

Brent, you did exactly the right thing by not clearing. Wet sand the spots out with 600 and if you really want it to look good go ahead and do the whole car with 600 to get it flat, then retape, shoot another layer of color and then clear it. A word of advice to yah, first layer of clear wait 15 mins then second layer of clear, wait 20 mins or so, then 3rd layer of clear. If you do 4 layers wait 30 mins then do the last layer. also first layer put it on damp, second layer wet, third layer a wet as you can without running it as well as 4th if you do so. If you do run the clear you can always block it off and buff it . Good luck buddy. Daniel Ray

You are a life saver, and I will give you a call this week for sure, I have questions but by the time I finally sit down I think it's too late to call.

I think the temperature got me this time, I will be running two heaters in the garage before I reapply the base Wednesday or Thursday.

My homemade paint booth worked great though, wish I had my garage set up like that sooner, there was no overspray or out of control fumes this time, I had a bit of a home made sidedraft with the fron plastic'd off and fans pulling the air out.

Hey, no one got good painting without practice, and while not ideal I am definitely getting LOTS of practice, haha.

Well, I got right up to the point of tacking it and trying to repaint it and then I chickened out. I'm going to call some shops tomorrow and see what they would charge to reshoot the main shell. Here's as it sits right now.

I ran out of time and just couldn't emotionally deal with another round of failure to be honest with you. But hey, I painted a lot of parts that are going on it, so it is what it is. :D

You have come a LONG way man!! Don't give up now!! All looks great thus far. Have faith in yourself...It will be SO worth it when you tell everyone that you painted it yourself and you see the looks on their faces. You said it yourself, body work is NOT easy. YOU CAN DO IT!!:D :D

yeah you made it way to far to give up. what kind of paint are you using? and what type of reducer and whats the temp in your garage? coordinate your reducer with the temp your in and it may help. it looks fine blocked out, hit it again, if it runs spot sand and touch up. Dont pay someone after getting that far

I'm having a painter come by tonight to assess the situation, so either he will quote me a price I can live with or I will be reshooting it tomorrow by myself.

I'm using LIMCO 1234 base/clear, I was using medium reducer but I bought a gallon of fast to adjust to the temperature drop.

I'm just nervous about shooting over the base, it could soften up on me and lift, I don't have the know how to know better, that and I could just outright screw it up again, lol. Why oh why couldn't I have done it right the first time? I have worked myself into a pretty bad corner, an expensive one at that.

what temp are you painting in? its pretty fresh, hit it with some prep solvent and paint it up, should be ok.
where are you located?
the worst thing that could happen is you do the same thing again, I think youve gone to far to give it up

You wouldn't believe what I found out this afternoon, it's embarrassing to even say.

I looked an dlooked online for the technical data sheet for the paint, never could find it. The shop I bought the paint from had 1:1 written on the basecoat. It seemed awfully thin to me but I went with it. Well, today I found the actual tech sheet, the basecoat gets mixed at a 2:1 ratio, so no wonder I had problems with runs, I'm upset as hell, embarrassed too. The parts I painted good turned out just fine and the color is as it should be, but had I known it was 2:1 the whole time I wouldn't have had a run, and if I did it wouldn't have been many. So given this information I am sure I can paint it myself. But now I am worried about the prep on the basecoat I have done since I shot it. So it's a bummer all the way around, I just want the car painted and painted right, whether I do it or this guy does it. Now I have to worry about color variation, although I'm not too too worried because I have painted on various days, mixing it each day, and all the colors are even on every piece. If I get the shell done right, I can correct any other issues in the spring, I want to drive this damned car already, I'm depressed as hell right now. :(

Dude don't get desperate Now you will regret it later.
I had to finish and drive my car and now I planning a complete Do over, drive train, color and finish which will cost me a lot more  then if I would have just took my time with out any deadlines. But I did enjoy the car this summer.

I think with my new found information I can get it done right, if I didn't I wouldn't go forward. We'll see what tomorrow brings, but the 2:1 vs. 1:1 floored me. :frown:

Brent, The Sand Job You Did Looks Great. My Only Concern Is That The Different Reduction "may" Change The Color. If I Were In Your Shoes, I Would Reduce The Paint The Same As You Did On All The Other Parts (same Reducer, same Reduction, same Spray Presure Etc) I Also Would Be Very Careful How I Applied It( Very Light, mist, even Coats)"do Not Lay It On Wet.." Wait Between Coats. Once The Basecoat Is On Evenly, wait 30 Min To 45 Min, I Would Go Ahead And Apply Clearcoat(4 Coats, waiting Between Coats). The Tough Part Is I Never Used The Type Of Paint That You Are Using, but This Info Is Pretty Much Standard Though. Hope This Helps, again I Gove You A Lot Of Credit, Your Project Will Be Worth It...best Wishes.
