Wide Band Oxygen Sensor Life

I had a customer ask how to ensure how his new wide band oxygen sensor will live a long happy life. Here is what we tell all of our customers. If you follow all 3 of these steps, you will have a sensor that lasts a long time.

1) If you run leaded gas, make sure to let the unit warm up before starting the car. This burns off the excess lead and other contaminates. You should let the sensor warm up (approx 15 seconds) everytime you start the car. This is accomplished by turning on the ignition, but not starting the car.

2) Make sure that the sensor is not mounted in a place where moisture will get to it. If you have to store your car for more than a week, take the sensor out and keep it in a dry place.

3) Ensure that your car is tuned well. Excess fuel and excess heat will lessen the life of the sensors. Consistently running the car lean, or rich will burn up the sensor faster. Running excessively high EGTs will also lessen the life of the sensor.

Hope that helps out at least somebody.
