what is the bolt on the top / back of the alternator for?

Not the one where the power wire goes, but the one that goes into the case right on top. Thanks.

That threaded hole usually doesn't have a bolt in it. Some of the aftermarket hotwire kits send a bolt like that one with the kit so you can use it to mount the fuse holder to the back of the alternator. HTH ---Keith
 
Does our alternator interchange with anything from the 80's? I know we can use the LT1 Impala alternator, but the stocker might have had a different mounting bracket there on an older car.
 
GM doesn't design stuff like alternators for use in one specialty car like a GN- they pull as many existing parts off the shelf as they can and integrate them into specialty cars like the GN.
that same alternator case was used in probably dozens of different cars at any given time- usually in heavily optioned cars with all sorts of electronic gizmos like Caddies and Corvettes.
