welding on 700R4 tranny bellhousing???

I managed today to do a major screwup. While in the process of installing my new Syclone motor alone, I used a round phillips type screwdriver to assist in aligning the bellhousing holes of the motor to the tranny. To my dismay, I cracked the tranny bellhousing on the passenger side, about 6 inches. It doesn't get into the internals (I don't believe as it hasn't been removed yet) just cracked in the outer bellhousing lip area.

Can this be successfully repaired by welding, or must I start over with a complete new housing? I'd appreciate any knowledgeable input. I believe the case is aluminium. Thanks,

Yes, the case is die cast aluminum and it can be welded. Drill a small hole at the end of the crack to subdue further propagation and have someone zip the crack back together.

Thanks Greg. I had thought that was the case, but haven't "been there-done that" before. I appreciate the comments,
