I have been so busy myself, I havent been able to go to Walmart and fight the crowds. I originally thought of making a financial contribution, and in fact have the money in my paypal account ready to go. I do understand Chris's dilema on the money thing though, so I will definately try to get a box out or be looking to see if a financial option becomes available. I was also thinking of contributing directly to the uso, but really wanted to be involved in this effort if possible.

Thank you for chiming in. We are considering doing this, if it would work out better to have a paypal account open. I would consider posting who donated what amount, and showing what your money went towards.

I received the first donations today. I'm going to start a runnig tally of what we have this weekend and I will post the update here.

Bandaid,

Sorry I was not able to reply to you faster. My grandmother passed away and I have been in Long Island New York since Saturday afternoon. I had no internet access there.

It is 3am and I just got home from the airport after two flights delayed a total of over three hours. I will post what all I have recieved and from whom tomorrow evening after work.

I emailed Nick a list of the current supporters and a list of the current donations.

I asked him to post it in the second post in this thread currently labeled "for updates". I will ask Nick to post all donation and support updates in that post.

At this point support is very thin, and not at all what I have anticipated. I think it will be best to postpone the shipout date until Monday December 27th. We have a good deal of donations so far but I know we can do better.

I am doing my shopping tomorrow and will ask Nick to update again tomorrow.

Thanks,

Chris Skarzenski

I just finished my shopping. I still have a few more things to get, but the bulk of it is done.

I sent Nick another list to put in the update post.

Nick,

Could you please post this to my second post in the troop support project
thread. It is the one with "for updates" in the text area.

Thanks'

Hey,

Question about the CDs with mp3s. Are these blank?? Or do have you actually donated music as well?? I wouldn't mind donating my some of my small music collection, but I don't know how they are on that stuff.

BTW Chris, I just saw your PM. I tried to PM you, but your box was full. Unfortunately, I just emptied my box out as well and can't remember what I wrote about.

That is ONE HECK of a list of stuff. I missed if you said you're accepting paypal donations or not.

Chris,

The CD's are blank, but I am going to put MP3's on them. My buddies said it was one of their favorite things when they were there.

I don't have a paypal account, but if someone else wanted to receive the money and send it to me I would not mind doing the shopping, or if someone else wanted to reveive it and do the shopping that would be fine with me as well. Again, if there is cash involved I think it would be best to have a third party to verify.

I have a paypal account both here in Germany and in America. For verification, I'm sure there are many ways to cover bases. If you think that's still a sticking point for more donations. The only problem with sending me paypal is the currency exchange would REALLY hurt any donations.

I'm sure I could scan receipts and show digital pics.

As for the mp3s, I could put my collection on CDs as well. I think I have a little of everything. I'm sure some soldiers would like to listen to Enya. :p j/k

Anyways. Thanks for letting me on what's going on. It's a hectic time of year for everyone so, I'm sure that's a good part of the reason for the sluggish turnout.

How about a nice poem to get everyone thinking...

(sorry if this is a repost)
Christmas Poem

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,
HE LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF
PLASTER AND STONE.

I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY
WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,
AND TO SEE JUST WHO
IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.

I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,
A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,
NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,
NOT EVEN A TREE.

NO STOCKING BY MANTLE,
JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES
OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.

WITH MEDALS AND BADGES,
AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,
A SOBER THOUGHT
CAME THROUGH MY MIND.

FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT,
IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER,
ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.

THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING,
SILENT, ALONE,
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR
IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.

THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE,
THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER,
NOT HOW I PICTURED
A UNITED STATES SOLDIER.

WAS THIS THE HERO
OF WHOM I'D JUST READ?
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO,
THE FLOOR FOR A BED?

I REALIZED THE FAMILIES
THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS
WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.

SOON ROUND THE WORLD,
THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE
A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.

THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM
EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,
LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.

I COULDN'T HELP WONDER
HOW MANY LAY ALONE,
ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE
IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.

THE VERY THOUGHT
BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE,
I DROPPED TO MY KNEES

AND STARTED TO CRY.

THE SOLDIER AWAKENED
AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
"SANTA DON'T CRY,
THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;

I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM,
I DON'T ASK FOR MORE,
MY LIFE IS MY GOD,
MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS."

THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER
AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,
I COULDN'T CONTROL IT,
I CONTINUED TO WEEP.

I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS,
SO SILENT AND STILL
AND WE BOTH SHIVERED
FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.

I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE
ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR
SO WILLING TO FIGHT.

THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,
WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,
WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA,
IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE."

ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH,
AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.
"MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,
AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT."
