Transmission experts: inline trans filter advice

I'm about to install an external trans cooler on my '86 T-type. In the past I have seen some transmission shops put disposable filters about the size of a soup can before the cooler.

My questions are: Are these any good? Do they greatly restrict flow and put undue pressure on the pump?

they work quite well and dont cause any ill side effects except introducing an new place for an oil leak.
