Trans whine

It is really noticeable at start up when the rpms flare and then settle down. Trans has great pressures (trans has about 300 miles and has whined since installed), has done this with a new 9x11 and now a new PTC 9.5.

Is this the pump? What is the cause?

Thanks,
Mike

Almost sounds like a power steering whine to me but it could be the pump in the tranny. Do you have a stethiscope so you can use it to determine where the noise is coming from?

Thanks Charlie.

Yeah I thought it was the power steering pump too and kind of blew it off. It makes the sound with the serpentine belt off so it is definitely isolated to the trans.

I'll probe around and see if I can pinpoint exactly what part of the trans is making the noise.

Well I know the 700R4 and the 2004R have been known to have noisy tranny pumps but I don't think that's what it is.

Pressure regularor buzz aka PR valve...try a search in a search engine see what comes up. I can remember the fix for it..:frown:

Whinning Tranny

Just curious? Did you ever find out what was making the whinning noise?

Honestly, I haven't really dug into it anymore. This was a trans I bought outright so I have no before to gauge the noise against. General consensus was pump buzz and since it does it in all gears and trans pressure at full tv is over 270 with no fluctuations I just let it go. I'll just wait to grind the flats on the valve lands when I go in to lighten the governor.
