torque converter problems

I need your help. My '95 Supercharged Bonneville is sputtering (you can see it in the boost/vacuum gauge as well as feel it) and it is not engine related as far as I can tell. The car seems to run and accelerate fine, but when you are driving between 38 and 48 mph it seems to sputter - the gauge will jump +-3 lbs. My mechanic tells me it has something to do with the torque converter lockup going bad. The car runs fine otherwise and has about 120,000 miles on it. Has anyone heard of this?

I highly doubt it's the problem, but you can try unplugging the solenoid. It's usually on the front of the tranny, sticking out. Unplug it and if it fixes the problem, that's it.

No it was not the torque converter, had it checked out yesterday. Still have no idea what is causing this slight sputtering. The car accelerates and starts fine. It just sputters at the 38-46 mph when traveling on a level road at a constant speed - not accelerating or deccelerating.
