I finally installed a lockup harness on my 200-4R. Up till now (a few hundred miles) I had been running a 3000 stall converter with no TCC wiring connect.

Can that lead to browning fluid and a slightly burned smell?

yep.
Running a converter that has a stall speed higher than cruise rpm, makes some serious heat.
If you have no additional cooler capacity, that in rad unit will be insufficient.
BTDT, and have a junk, $800 ATD converter, in the scrap pile for a reminder..
