Thermostat housing

I'm going to be replacing my thermostat, after clearing everything out of the way and removing the retainer is there a method to removing the housing ?

Pull, pull and pull some more. It will probably be pretty rusted if its never been out. Have a new stainless housing ready, had to destroy mine to get it out! I ended up drilling a hole through it to be able to get a long screwdriver in it to use as a lever to get it out.
