Before I put the car away last fall, I noticed the speedometer cable making a little noise and I was wondering what is the most popular lube for it.

Hi,
I think you can't really see what it's all about. Thanks for the input, though....

Huh??? Anyway.... Your GM dealer sells a grease specifically for this purpose. I would recommend using it, although I'm sure others have used different products. Here's the procedure from GNTTYPE.org:

Speedometer Cable Maintenance

Let us know how it goes... I'm particularly interested, as my speedo, while not making noise, is doing the 'bounce' thing.
HTH...

White lithium grease-Lubriplate brand-is the most popular.
Graphite compound is best.
Don't lube the last 6 inches near the speedometer head, it can work it's way into the speedo.

Thanks for the replies, now I've got another project before she hits the streets for the season....

Hi,
Sorry for the blurry comment before. Graphite lube, as you would use in a lock,is my favorite.I have had NO luck separating the two cables, however. As a consequence, I have been unable to lube the lower cable.
