shifter prob

i got a newer handle was working, but had to take off for a prob with cable. Put new cable on and realized the shifter itself at the TOP the inch long rod that fits in the top is kind of bent and part of the top of the chrome is broke. Now with handle on it will not shift at all! Only with handle off. Any clue anyone???

When you pull the handle off does it go in and out by itself? The shifter handle is a super simple item, there is a spring pushing a rod that has an angle on it that pushes the actual shifter rod down. If you take it off and mess with the handle you should be able to see the issue very easily.

actually the handle is a few months old. it's the ROD that's messed up. whatever its called about 2 inch piece in the top of the rod comes out, kinda bent and the top in the back of the actuall rod itself is broke off. It always worked for me before though.
