Hello - I want to switch my rear end over to a limited slip posi. My stock is a one wheel wonder. What do I need to get besides the carrier? I was not planning on switching the axles. I found a Detroit Locker LS on Summit for about $400. Any other suggestions or comments welcome.

Put a alburn in it way better than a locker, get new carrier bearings and install back lash should be close if you use the old shims

Don't get an auburn- they are cone style and not really rebuildable. I have busted 2 of them in my T. I then bought a used eaton- I broke that at Reynolds a couple weeks ago. Just buy a new eaton- that's what I'm doing today. Also get the two special bearing/races for it that it seems to need on the description from summit. Good times, good times...

Rear End Options

Ok so I'm checking stuff out on Summit and found an Eaton unit, but need to know if the axles are 28 or 30 spline. Which is it?

Also, it appears that among the choices between brands are clutch style and cone style differentials. Previous posts have suggested to stay away from cone style. Why?

Anyone out there have any experience with Moser or Strange differentials?

If your going to go further with your build get the 30 spline carrier and 30 spline axles and you wont have to worry about it till you go to a nine inch ford rear end. Factory axles are 28 spline. Oh yeah I forgot get the eaton its rebuildable. Auburn is not. moser and strange are more money. Call Randys ring and pinion and they will have answers to all your questions. I got a lot of parts through them. OOPS SORRY FOR SAYING A NON VENDORS NAME

Stock axles are 28 spline, I know that if you have a clutch type posi, you don't want to use synthetic oil.

I agree with above posters, the Auburn unit is not rebuildable therefore a unwise choice.
If your going for brand new parts, the Eaton or a "Tru-Trac" gear unit are best.
If you don't mind scrounging, you can find used factory "posi" units in many different GM vehicles from 1970-1987, 28 splines 3 series carriers.
Good luck,

Kevin.

Detroit locker is about as strong as they come, only drawback is it's noisy operation, takes some getting used to and not for the nervous types.

Kevin.

Thanks for all the help. One last questions and I'm off on this project.

I was curious as to the axle code on my GN. It is 2TJ G 318.

My GM manual says these rear ends should be an 8 character code representing the following:

4 = axle code (3 character)
5 = manufacturer (1 character)
6 = Day Built (3 character)
7 = Shift (1 character)

Does anyone have the code translation for this? All I know is the 2 is for an 8.5". The fact I can't seem to see a "shift code" is a little weird.

Were installing an eaton in my dads 69 gs 12 bolt as we speak...You need one for 28 spline axles best price we got on one was at DTS drivetrain specialists in warren mich...

Eaton Posi's are proven, but I will say I put a Tru-Trac in my truck (also has a 8.5 rear just 30 spline) and I really like it...Very smooth at light throttle turning, give it a bit more throttle and you can feel the rear instantly lock together...Super quiet, and there's nothing to wear out because it doesn't have any clutches or cones to wear out..

Price was about the same as the rest.

Oh and Moser likes them so much they quit putting regular posi units in their rear ends they only use Try-Tracs or Spools.
