So I have been chasing a rear end noise in my 87 Hardtop. It has just under 86k on it. I have replaced all bearings including axle bearings. It have verified backlash and pinion preload as well as rotating torque with axles removed. Noise does not change when throttle is backed off or on cruise or axcell. At this point since everything is new I am about ready to install a new gear set. I know some aftermarket gear sets are quieter than others. I am aware they are only as good as the installer, and I have access to all the tools to set pinion depth, preload and carried preload as well. I have 4 gbodies and they all make rear end noise...grrrrrr....but this car is different the other 3 are pinion noises that change with throttle position.
