no brake lights part THREE!

No, it is not a switch. It is a harness connector that should be on top of the column where the harness connects about 1/3 the way up from the floor. It is white or that yellowish plastic color. It is rectangular and flat but bent into a cresent shape to contour around the column. Has a bunch of wires connected to it.

What happens is that through the motion of the column, especially if you us the tilt much, the connector will loosen up. It will look like it is together but there will be enough play to break contact. Moving the tilt around will make contact and break contact. All of your other lights will work, including your third brake light, but you will not have main stop lights.
 
Found the culprit: that brand new ac delco switch was bad right out of the box. Switch #3 went in and the sucker lit up like a Christmas tree! Thanks for the suggestions everybody!
