Iron or aluminum heads?

I am considering a set of heads for my car. Based on performance and reliability, what is the better choice - ported stock heads or aluminum. If alumminum which in particular.

I too was asking this same question about 8 or so months ago. I have heard too many horror stories about exhaust guides leaking, and head gasket sealing issues with the Champion GN1 (aluminum) heads. It seemed, at that point, everyone was stating "use Champion irons".

I purchased a set of irons from Champion but I haven't put them on yet.

Here is their website if you need to read about them.

The Champion irons are the stock 8445 heads but have been CNC'd. They look awesome. I think I paid $1320 shipped to my door.

A out of the box Champion Aluminums will out flow the Champion Irons. I had Champion Irons and sold them to get the Champion Aluminums. I haven't had any problems with headgasket seal or exhaust guides leaking.

After reading about a few people running 9s with Ported Champion Iron heads, I didn't see a need for aluminum heads. I sent a set to VPE Racing and have a set of heads that outflow Champion Irons and are within 10-12 cfm of the aluminum heads. They cost about $1,000 shipped to my door which is probably $600-$700 less than aluminum and should easily support a 9 sec combo. If you have the additional funds, get the aluminum heads. I have the extra $$$ but didn't see a good cost/benefit for the power I plan to make.
