OK, I'm putting a set of these Walker 22623 Quiet-Flow mufflers on my Cutlass. The inlet and outlet are both centered and the word 'OUTLET' is stamped right in the middle of the case like this. (This is a Web shot of units that someone added flanges to.)

So, which side is the outlet?

Look through the muffler and you should see some louvers in the tubes. The louvers face toward the engine to catch more of the exhaust and quiet things down. If there's no louvers and it's drilled holes and it's straight through it won't make a difference.

Yep, it's a straight through with perforations in the pipe. I figured that may make it reversible but wasn't entirely sure.
